Amboy School at Sunset

The voices of children have been stilled for some years at the little school; indeed there are no children in Amboy, and only a handful of adults who call Amboy - in the Mojave desert off Route 66 - home.

Columns, Barstow, CA

These columns are part of the old Harvey House train depot in Barstow, itself home to an enormous rail yard in the middle of the Mojave desert. Barstow sits at the intersection of Interstates 15 and 40 (the former Route 66).

Magic Symbols in the Desert

Are they ancient Runes, or Hieroglyphics? Neither. They are the patterns in the metal tread of a massive earth mover at the salt evaporation ponds in Amboy, California, a few miles off of Route 66, in the Mojave desert.
