The Route 66 Photo Workshop - 2006

Route 66 is a state of mind as much as it is a physical roadway. Each winter, I conduct at least one photo workshop along the old road from Victorville to Amboy. Contact me if you'd like to join me next time.

Road Rage
Amboy School at Sunset
The voices of children have been stilled for some years at the little school; indeed there are no children in Amboy, and only a handful of adults who call Amboy - in the Mojave desert off Route 66 - home.
Barstow Bridge, California
The Barstow Bridgge at sunset, viewed from the historic Harvey House train depot, in Barstow, California, just off of Route 66
Columns, Barstow, CA
These columns are part of the old Harvey House train depot in Barstow, itself home to an enormous rail yard in the middle of the Mojave desert. Barstow sits at the intersection of Interstates 15 and 40 (the former Route 66).
Magic Symbols in the Desert
Are they ancient Runes, or Hieroglyphics? Neither. They are the patterns in the metal tread of a massive earth mover at the salt evaporation ponds in Amboy, California, a few miles off of Route 66, in the Mojave desert.
Bottle Art
This is folk art and it's alongside Route 66, west of the community of Helendale, in the Mojave Desert of California. Photographed with backlight on a late January afternoon, 2003.
Glass Web
Shattered glass in the driver's compartment on an ancient earthmover looks like a spider web.

Location: Salt evaporation ponds, just off Route 66, in Amboy, California, in the Mojave desert.
Calcium Chloride
These tanks glow with the light of the setting sun at the salt grinding plant in Amboy, California, in the Mojave desert and hard by famed Route 66.
Train Wheel at Sunset
Hills Brother salt grinding plant, Amboy, California, just off Route 66 in the Mojave desert.
Detail - Train Car
I have no idea what these are, but they dot all the tanker cars. These were photographed in the setting sun at the Hills Brothers salt grinding facilities, in Amboy, CA, along Route 66, in the Mojave desert.
Abstract in PVC
An Catholic Church in Amboy, California now serves as a warehouse for discarded items. The cast-offs include the coils and connecting joints of PVC pictured here. Route 66 and the Mojave desert is just outside the door of the church.
Tool Box
Tool box at Tom's Welding, in Barstow, California - Tom's is located on Old Highway 58, a short distance from historic Route 66, in the Mojave desert.
Dont Drink the Water!
Water tank at the salt works in Amboy, California, off of Route 66, in the Mojave desert.
Towers, Amboy
The base of the towers at the Hills Brother salt grinding plant glow with the light of the setting sun, in the Mojave desert adjacent to Route 66.
Gas Pump, Route 66
This old gas pump, in Newberry Springs in the Mojave desert, is part of the original Whiting Brothers chain of gas stations that sprouted up all over the west and southwest.
Candle Holder
Candle holder on a bar top in an abandoned Catholic Church in the Mojave desert, in the community of Amboy, CA, along Route 66.
The Virgin Prays for Amboy
The Virgin Mary stands outside the unused Catholic Church, in Amboy, California, just off Route 66 in the Mojave desert.
In the Belly of the Pisgah Crater
This is the view out of the Pisgah Crater, found just off of historic Route 66. Newberry Springs and Barstow are to the west. There are supposedly a number of lava tubes/caves at the crater, but we found only this one. The crater is under private ownership and it's being eaten away by mining activity. For now, enough of it remains to visit, and the view from the top takes in a huge chunk of the Mojave desert.
Nighthawks, Roys Cafe
Our group lined up at the counter for dinner at the diner. Location: Roy's Cafe and Motel, in Amboy, on Route 66, in the vast Mojave desert. It's the only motel and cafe for perhaps 40 miles.
Breakfast at the Route 66 Motel
A guest at the Route 66 Motel enjoys breakfast on a pleasant winter morning in Barstow, California, in the Mojave desert. The Route 66 Motel features old cars, signs, gas pumps and more in its parking lot, and some of the rooms contain round beds that at one time graced the rooms at a Las Vegas hotel. There are phones in the rooms, space heaters provide ample heat in the winter, the t.v. has 66 channels, the rooms are clean and cute, and the price is right - this is a must stop for Route 66 fans.
The Route 66 Motel
Sunrise is a few minutes away from Barstow, California, and the Route 66 Motel, along the highway of the same name.

This photograph, and the rest of the images in this gallery, were made on the Route 66 photography workshop in January, 2003. It was co-sponsored by the San Diego Natural History Museum -
