Route 66 is a state of mind as much as it is a physical roadway. Each winter, I conduct at least one photo workshop along the old road from Victorville to Amboy. Contact me if you'd like to join me next time.

In the Belly of the Pisgah Crater

This is the view out of the Pisgah Crater, found just off of historic Route 66. Newberry Springs and Barstow are to the west. There are supposedly a number of lava tubes/caves at the crater, but we found only this one. The crater is under private ownership and it's being eaten away by mining activity. For now, enough of it remains to visit, and the view from the top takes in a huge chunk of the Mojave desert.

Nighthawks, Roys Cafe

Our group lined up at the counter for dinner at the diner. Location: Roy's Cafe and Motel, in Amboy, on Route 66, in the vast Mojave desert. It's the only motel and cafe for perhaps 40 miles.

Breakfast at the Route 66 Motel

A guest at the Route 66 Motel enjoys breakfast on a pleasant winter morning in Barstow, California, in the Mojave desert. The Route 66 Motel features old cars, signs, gas pumps and more in its parking lot, and some of the rooms contain round beds that at one time graced the rooms at a Las Vegas hotel. There are phones in the rooms, space heaters provide ample heat in the winter, the t.v. has 66 channels, the rooms are clean and cute, and the price is right - this is a must stop for Route 66 fans.

The Route 66 Motel

Sunrise is a few minutes away from Barstow, California, and the Route 66 Motel, along the highway of the same name.

This photograph, and the rest of the images in this gallery, were made on the Route 66 photography workshop in January, 2003. It was co-sponsored by the San Diego Natural History Museum - http://www.sdnhm.org/ - and Image Quest photo tours - http://home.attbi.com/~wymanburke/Route66.html
