Young Bison
River Crossing, Hayden Valley (We witnessed a herd of bison - perhaps a hundred or so - crossing the road in front of us and then swimming across the Yellowstone River. It was a primeval scene.)
Elk Near West Thumb Junction
Moose Jump, Gros Ventre Road, Jackson Hole, Wyoming (Four of us traveled up the Gros Ventre Road to look for aspens and old buildings. Instead, we found an old moose browsing at the edge of a pond. A "No Trespassing" sign kept us away from the moose. But it didn't keep the moose away from us.
As we photographed other subjects around the pond, the moose ambled toward us, then turned toward the split rail fence. I thought to myself that she would have difficulty making the jump. I was wrong. After stopping in front of the fence for a few moments, the moose suddenly launched herself into flight, and easily cleared the fence. After her leap, she wandered over to a big bush and happily munched on the leaves for a while, and soon enough we left her alone.
Technically, it's not my best photograph, but I think it's one of the more unusual photographs I've been able to make. I've never seen, much less photographed, an old moose clear a Wyoming fence with such grace.)
