Sierra Nevada East Side - 2004

Photographs from the 2005 photography tour of the east side of the Sierra Nevada mountains, between Mono Lake and Bridgeport, California.

October 28, 2005 - Great Pyrenees and Flock
Near the ghost town of Bodie.
October 29, 2003 - Gnarly, Dude
Beavers in California? Above Lundy lake, beavers have cut down significant numbers of aspens and other trees to create a series of ponds. This aspen looks about ready to topple.
October 30, 2005 - Dead Car, Bodie Ghost Town
The amazing ghost town of Bodie includes this rusting automobile. I always have fun trying to photograph the car.

October 31, 2005 - Do You Believe in Ghosts?
I do not ordinarily believe the spirits of the dead walk the earth, not even the streets of the ghost town of Bodie. However, rest assured that this ghostly photograph is one image, not a double exposure. It was not manipulated in Photoshop, except that it was sepia-toned to give it an old-fashioned look. Happy Halloween!

Over the years, a collection of rangers, caretakers, and visitors claim to have seen or heard ghosts in the ghost town of Bodie. On my first visit to the town, made with friends on skis in the dead of winter, two lonely rangers told me about a murdered Chinese woman who occasionally appeared in a window in one of the buildings near the center of town. The rangers had themselves never seen the woman, but both had heard odd noises emanating from that building at night. My friends and I were glad to ski out of town before the sun dropped out of sight.
November 1, 2005 - The Looking Glass
While at first glance it might appear we're looking through a window at the ghost town of Bodie, a closer look reveals the wagon and buildings are just surface deep, reflecting off the old glass that is acting like a warped mirror in a fun house.
November 2, 2005 - Through the Window
Windows at the ghost town of Bodie.
November 3, 2005 - Lundy Creek
Water rushes over and by the dark rock and colorful leaves on the east side of the Sierra Nevada Mountains.
November 4, 2005 - Aleep on the Job?
To peruse my Sierra East Side galleries is to know I enjoy photographing Great Pyrenees sheep dogs. This one was fairly casual about its duties, as long as the sheep did not wander too close to the nearby road.
November 6, 2005 - Lee Vining Canyon
A pine and aspens stand in the foreground, with the crest of the High Sierra and Yosemite National Park to the east.
November 7, 2005 - Saw 2!
Sawmill blade and wood at the ghost town of Bodie.

(With apologies to the new film with the same title.)
November 8, 2005 - Steeple in the Window
I've posted a similar photo somewhere else in my galleries. Sometimes it's fun to try the same photograph again, and that's what I think about this photo and this location. I think most people never turn around from the "normal" view of the old church at Bodie, to see the reflection of its steeple in the window of an old house. I think this year's interpretation is better than my last effort, and I'll probably try it again next year.
