Ballona Creek cuts through portions of Los Angeles, Culver City, and Marina del Rey. Unfortunately, it's entire length is a concrete conduit. None-the-less it's a favorite haunt of a variety of sea and shore birds. Each spring, along the lower reaches and on the north side of the creek, wildflowers can turn the Ballona Wetlands into a sea of color.

This is an homage gallery to my brother, Dan, "coaster," who has made so many terrific wildlife photographs at places like Torrey Pines State Park.

Heron, Wildflowers

Wildflowers grow out of the concrete at Ballona Creek, where a heron searches for prey.

Heron at the Magic Hour

When I ride a bike, I usually like to wear the uniform - lycra shorts and jersey, gloves, helmet, and bike shoes. Except for a patch kit, pump and water bottle, I hate carrying anything extra on my bike. But for this ride, I put my camera, with a 400mm, f/5.6 lens attached, inside a daypack and slung it all over my shoulders. It took me about 30 minutes to reach a spot along Ballona Creek where I spotted this beautiful heron, about an hour before sunset.
