Yosemite National Park - photographed on the Yosemite Association photography workshop I conducted in October, 2002

Night Sky over El Capitan

The high reflectivity of Yosemite's granite walls allowed me to make a 30 second time exposure of this famous landmark. At wide angle, the stars barely have space to move during the lengthy exposure.

Tangled Oaks

Almost no one ever thinks to turn around to look at the lovely grove of oaks in front of the Ansel Adams Gallery, in Yosemite. I think the oak branches make interesting designs.

Valley Oaks, Stoneman Meadow

Dawn comes late to Yosemite Valley, because it takes a while for the sun to decide if it wants to climb above the massive granite walls. When sunrise does come, a nice place to see and photograph it from is Stoneman Meadow, across the road from Curry Village. The hazy background was caused by smoke from a forest fire (managed by the Park Service) that flowed into the Valley from higher country.

Autumn Dogwood

I employed my separate flashgun - off camera - to light the leaves from below, to create what I think is an unusual photograph. Photographed at Happy Isles, in Yosemite Valley.

Milkweed

This odd plant forms a seed pod in late summer, which bursts open in the autumn. The seeds, attached to filaments, float away on the first breeze. This milkweed was in Leidig Meadow, in Yosemite Valley.

Fern with Spores

This is the underside of a fern - note the spores. I used the on-board flash, with a diffuser, to light the picture. I see I used a rather wide f/stop, so it's little wonder that not much is in focus in the picture. But what is in focus looks quite sharp. Photographed in front of the Ahwahnee Hotel, Yosemite.

On the Edge

I don't know why I continue to do this, or how long I can keep doing it, but there is an amazing sense of concentration when I climb out on this protruding peice of granite, at Glacier Point, Yosemite. I like to stand there for about 10 seconds, just long enough for the person behind the camera I've set up to snap the picture - probably a few seconds longer than it would take to hit bottom should I fall off. My big fear, though, isn't that I'm going to fall - it's that somebody will follow me out and slip and fall off.

I've only made one tough climb at Yosemite - Royal Arches, which leads up from behind the Ahwahnee Hotel - but I don't think any portion of that climb put me more on edge than standing at the edge of Glacier Point does.

The lighting isn't the best with this image - I think early morning or much later in the afteroon would work better, but with photography, as with life, you take what you can get, sometimes.

Barn Interior - Foresta, Yosemite

The little community of Foresta, a private inholding of Yosemite National Park, is rarely visited by outsiders. Yet it is an interesting place visually and historically. It lies on the Old Coulterville-Yosemite Road, the first toll road into the park, in the 1870s. It was the first road to allow cars into the park. But the route is now mostly inaccessable. The only sure way to complete the journey would be on a mountain bike. Maybe I'll try it one year.

One of the barns has not yet been locked away by the park service. The interior of this barn, which I presume must have once held hay, is like a cathedral, particularly once your eyes adjust to the low levels of light.

Stoneman Bridge

One of my favorite locations in Yosemite is Stoneman Bridge, especially in mid October. The bridge spans the Merced River, just across the road from Curry Village. I made this picture when it was almost dark - no problem for my camera.
