Las Posadas Festival at Olvera Street, Los Angeles, California

This is an annual event, conducted each night from December 16 through December 24, held in the central historical district of the city. A procession of costumed participants winds its way around Olvera Street. Before the procession, there is music and dancing and a piñata filled with candy for kids to break open. After the procession, everyone is invited to enjoy hot cups of Champurados, a sweet drink made from corn, and delicious pastries, and enjoy a little more music.

Pico House

Pio Pico was the last Mexican governor of California. He reputedly wrote:

"What are we to do then? Shall we remain supine, while these daring strangers are overrunning our fertile plains, and gradually outnumbering and displacing us? Shall these incursions go on unchecked, until we shall become strangers in our own land?"

Truly, the more things change, the more they remain the same. And this time change comes, for the most part, peacefully. The Las Posadas festival is simply proof that people, and their cultures, can come together.
