Elephant Seals of the Central Coast of California
These are some of the larger creatures in the sea or on the earth. They are found along the beaches and coves near the little community of San Simeon.
Pups scramble out of the way as this male elephant seal issues a challenge to an interloper who would steal his harem.
A proud male spends time with his harem and offspring.
Mothers and their pups relax on the sand on a cold, February morning. Some seals have sand on their bodies; they use their flippers to move the sand, which may act to insulate body heat.
Note the scarred neck on this mature male - he's had many serious battles to secure his harem. He's taking a well deserved catnap.
Early morning light breaks over the beach near San Simeon, along the central coast of Califoria. Two males issue a frightening series of bellows through their massives noses, before doing battle over the rights to the harem.
