Bristlecone Pines: these trees are in the Patriarch Grove, more than 11,000 feet above sea level, in the White Mountains of California. Nearby White Mountain is 14,246 feet - 4,342 meters - in elevation. Some of the trees are more than 4,000 years old. Many of them have only a narrow strip of living bark to sustain them in this otherwise rather barren landscape, but this beautifully weathered specimen is definitely dead.

The San Andreas earthquake fault runs right through the town of Parkfield, in the Coast Range Mountains of California. This is where the North American Plate slides against the Pacific Plate.
