Road Shot (Our group took a side tour, from Bryce Canyon north, along a seldom used road, to the little community of Antimony. The scenery, including the sky, were unexpectedly beautiful. I made this photograph by pointing my camera out the front window of our van, and I think it's one of my favorite images from the trip.)

Is that Butch or the Sundance Kid? (The classic Western, "Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid" (with Paul Newman and Robert Redford), was partially filmed in Grafton.)

Frozen Grass, Grafton, Utah (When our photography group first arrived at the ghost town of Grafton, a few miles from Zion National Park, I was a bit disappointed. Subjects seem lacking - just a couple of old building that didn't even look that old.)

Splattered Window Dirt, Grafton, Utah (I do windows! No, I don't clean them, I like to photograph them, even dirty ones. I made this photograph with the help of a reversed 50mm lens - turning it around turned it into a macro lens.)

Carved Indian at the Mt. Carmel Junction, Utah (To our group of photographers, this American Indian looked a bit sad. We thought perhaps he was being exploited, at least a little bit, in the name of Commercialism. On the other hand, he was part of the fun of being a tourist along the backroads of Utah.
After saying goodbye the carved Indians, we headed to Bryce Canyon.)

More While Waiting in Line

Along the Highway (We had to wait for about 15 minutes for some road construction along the highway, as it left Zion Canyon and headed toward the higher country. Since we had the time, I got out of the car to make a few photographs along the side of the road. I found beautiful images almost everywhere I looked, from views out over massive sandstone cliffs, to the flowers at my feet.)

Colors in the Virgin River (Water on the surface of the Virgin River reflects the sunlit color of the surrounding sandstone walls, while the little cascade, in the shade, reflects the blue color of the sky.)

Water, Rock and Leaf - Who Wins?

At the Entrance to the Narrows (It's possible to walk along a trail beyond the end of the road in Zion Canyon. Soon enough, the trail ends, and those that wish to continue must walk between the increasingly narrow walls of the canyon, known in its upper reaches as The Narrows.)

In Zion Canyon (Though the hour wasn't late, much of the interior of Zion Canyon was already in shade, including here, where pillars of sandstone jutted up.)

Leaf Near Weeping Rock (Zion offers up a stupendous panorama of sandstone cliffs. Perhaps because I've been to the park several times, I decided on this trip to concentrate some of my efforts on smaller views.)

We Enter Zion National Park (These glorious sandstone cliffs are near the entrance to Zion Canyon.)

The Shadow Man of Zion (We hiked to the Lower Emerald Pool, where the water reflected the spectacular sandstone cliffs across Zion Canyon. I was reflected in the pool of water, too. This image has been flipped to make me right side up, although, from a photographer's point of view, I was upside down.

The View from Our Motel (Long, long after sunset, we photographed the cliffs above our motel, in the little town of Springdale, just outside of Zion National Park. The amount of light still in the sky that reflected off the cliffs and showed up in our photographs was startling, for we could not really see the colors with our naked eyes.)

The Players (Blackjack players congregate at one table in a sea of tables, under the perpetual twilight inside the Paris Hotel in Las Vegas.)

Photographers Above Paris (Walk the interior of the Paris Hotel and it feels like strolling along the streets of Paris during a perpetual twilight - except for the casino, of course, plunked down in the middle of the city of lights. The strange erector set at the upper right of this photograph is actually a support for the hotel's version of the Eiffel Tower.)

Ah, Paris! (We explored the vast, near hallucinatory interior as well as the outside of the Paris Hotel.)

Excalibur Hotel in Reflection (One of the towers of the hotel appears in reflection in the walkway connecting the Excalibur and the Luxor.)

Magic Kingdom For Adults (We were headed to Zion and Bryce Canyon National Parks. However, we spent the first night in Las Vegas. Before going to bed, we crusied the Las Vegas Strip and photographed some of the hotels, including the Excalibur.)

Random Photo #2 (Burrito's digesting, cell phone is charging, we stare out the window at the beauty of a desert sunset, and I shove my camera up against the window glass with one hand, press the shutter without looking at what the camera is looking at, while my other is hand on the steering wheel, and we are holding steady at 70 mph.)

Multi-Tasking Along the I-15 (This is what these trips are all about on the first day out: driving the van, on the cell phone, eating a burrito, talking trash, listening to the news and, oh yeah, shoving my camera out the window at 70 miles per hour to make a random photo or two.)

A Bountiful Crop at the Bottle Farm (Our group of seven photographers met in Los Angeles to begin our journey to Bryce and Zion National Parks, with a first night in Las Vegas. At the high desert town of Victorville, we decided to escape the freeway and take a portion of historic Route 66. Along the way, we stopped to admire the colorful folk art on exhibit at the Bottle Farm.)
