The vast Carrizo Plain National Monument contains a valley lying within the bosom of the Coast Range mountains. The grasslands of this remote place look much the way the Great Central Valley did before the arrival of the Spaniards, the Gold Rush, and urban sprawl. Wildlife and wildflowers abound. And the San Andreas fault, the vast earthquake zone that runs from the city of San Francisco to the Gulf of Mexico, is found here, too.
