Sierra Dawn The White Mountains, home of the Bristlecones, lie east of the Sierra Nevada mountain. The ridge in the foreground is part of the Whites - the Sierras rise out of the Owens Valley, not visible in this picture. The snow fields that are visible, beneath the grantie summits, are glaciers, notably the Middle Palisade and North Palisade glaciers.

Bristlecone at the Patriarch Grove Here, at 11,000 feet altitude, the rugged landscape is home to the hardiest bristlecones. This one, which would appear to be lifeless, has a few strips of green running up it's backside, all it needs to survive, while the dead bark serves to protect the living portion of the tree from the fiece winds of winter.
