Oregon Photo Tour/Ken Rockwell Homage - 2012

This year's first trip to the coast, with Ken Rockwell, included a great group of photographers, all of whom can create some fine mages, and all of whom were game to stay out until the last rays of light faded from the sky.

We called the trip "En Plein Air," the French term for "outside." It's also the phrase that describes the French Impressionists. The was made special by the addition of several gourmet meals prepared for us by Irene Shibata. Her meals blended perfectly with the idea of the trip, with some wonderful French-themed dishes, and a couple of amazing picnic lunches that we did indeed enjoy "en plein air."

I've become enamored of making photographs with my iPhone. Although I don't hold a candle to the likes of Cézanne, Degas, Renoir, etc, I tried to come up with some Impressionistic images of my own, with the help of the "Hipstamatic" app. The iPhone photos, at least those made with the Hipstamatic, are square.

Although I brought along a tripod and a monopod, I only used the latter, and sparingly. I managed to find objects on which to balance and steady my camera, or I used a high enough shutter speed to keep blur at bay. Or I simply worked with what I had; in this case, I panned the walked as she made her way along the boardwalk on the bluffs above Moonstone Beach.
We finished the day at Moonstone Beach, in Cambria, just as the sun was preparing to dip into the sea.
I like road shots - I wish I made more of them. The yellow yellow and black lines seems to lead me right into this picture (I crouched down to put more of the lines into the foreground).
Reflections are everywhere.
I loved making photographs of the classic cars at the car show. I managed to get our group there a little late, as cars were leaving as we were arriving; even so, there was plenty to photograph. Rather than photograph the entire car, I preferred to move in close.
THis is another example of my new technique for photographing flowers against the Sun.
One of many photographs made with my iPhone during the course of the weekend, I found these leaves in the little Los Osos Oaks Preserve.
I've found a way to place flowers against the sun, without having to dig my chin into the ground to look through my viewfinder or at the LCD (although a moveable LCD would also work).
We rented a cabin the foothills of the Coast Range Mountains, where Irene prepared meals and the group met to look at photographs.
The windmill atop Perfumo Road looks toward Morro Rock, that granitic core of a volcano that came to life 20,000,000 years ago.
Is someone blocking the road? Are his arms up in exultation because it's a beautiful morning? Is he posing for me?
Ordinarily, a cattle guard is a noisy strip of bars under the passings wheels of a car. Sometimes, though, when the light is right, it an also become the subjecy of a photograph.
The vintage look of the photograph and its rough frame give me the feel of En Pleinis Air.
A massive tractor, built by students at the nearby Cal Poly state university, was powered by four enormous engines. The tractor was on display at the Thursday night Farmers Market, in downtown San Luis Obispo.
Ken gave an inspiring presentation while we waited for Irene's dinner.
Morro Rock is emblematic of the Central Cost of California. We photographed the scene from the little town of Morro Bay.
Irene's dinner was itself a work of art, in the way it tasted and in its presentation.
